dad sometimes gets into scanning old photos. this is him in the middle with his grandmother and his great grandmother. i'm guessing about 1944. he lied about his age to get into the service, and then told the truth to get out.

my favorite story of dad's adventures was about him getting hijacked by pirates. he was moving a boat from cuba with a couple of friends (the same general time frame as this pic) and they had engine problems off the coast of florida. another boat pulled up and offered to tow them. when it was clear that the other boat wasn't going where they wanted to go, dad and friends just unhooked the boat. the pirate boat came back around and called shennanigans (actually they claimed whatever that "law" is that you get to keep what you find when on the water). at gunpoint.

i don't remember the end of the story, and how they managed to get out of the situation. maybe dad will fill that in.
