so. yesterday was adventure day. and i can check another life experience off the list - going to the emergency room to get stitches.

also going to a party with an opera singer present who did an amazing impromptu performance, but we'll get to that in a minute.

the dryer had been performing less and less well, finally not drying at all even on 3 cycles on high (and it had been strangely damp inside), so the boy and i decided we were going to fix it. pulled it away from the wall, and b. pulled the hose off. as he did there was a rush of fetid water from the hose. utterly disgusting. there was about another 2 gallons that we managed to get into a bucket. much cleaning ensued. in the midst of this i decided i was going to wash out the large vent section we had taken off the back (that holds the lint trap) because everything was mostly coated in wet lint. the damned thing is as big as an SUV muffler and upon later inspection is made entirely of razor sharp edges. as i was sloshing water around in it in the basement sink i put my hand underneath it (the thought of this still creeps me out) and ran my finger directly into one of the said edges.

yelling and hollering ensued, b. came running from the back yard where he was dealing with the alien gunk, he said, yeah, that looks bad, stiches bad. so, off we rushed (why do you rush? you know you're going to sit there for 4 hours, literally). we got to swedish hosptial, sat around for many hours (total time involved, about 5.5 hours), eventually getting 4 stiches in the end of my ring finger. there's even a picture of icky finger, because i had nothing better to do for quite some time than to play with b.'s camera phone.

of course, then b. went out to get a table saw to commemorate the event...

and then there was a great party last night thrown by architect friend henry, with all sorts of lovely people. and our model friend had an opera singer friend who did a little trio of arias in the acoustically awesome courtyard. it was amazing.

all in all not too bad though. the dryer works like a charm again. $15 of dryer hose and a hospital visit...

There is a sick kind of symmetry--sick, but somehow lovely--in getting a table saw on the day you slice a finger open. Tell the boy to be careful. Or maybe the shedding of blood will magically protect him. Heal well.

thanks :) and yes, hopefully the wound will be the talisman of protection.
