thanks to the knitting queen

thanks to the gang at the purlygirls stich and bitch last night, and in particular jenna the knitting queen much progress was made on the cute little boa scarf i'm working on for a friend's daughter.

it took many tries to get going on it - there was one step in the pattern that was unclear that i wouldn't have figured out. but it's a quick knit with artful yarns limerick chenille. woo!

yummy bubbles

on a friend's recommendation i had my first bubble tea at a little place at alki beach. MMMMM. coconut with tapioca.

the tea was awesome, but i think i loved the machine that sealed the whole drink closed almost as much. it puts a seal on like the interior seal of plastic on yogurt or pre-grated parmesan or cottage cheese. then you poke the straw through that. but the plastic had a cute asian cartoon character and the writing was (of course, to me) pretty and unreadable.

the tapioca was very strange (the pearls are so large) and very good.

damned chuckleheads

sorry about the comments thing, i know it's a pain in the ass. but i've been getting spammed. so, for the time being, i had to turn on typekey. it's not that i love you all any less.

super deluxe - why i love the web #5,643

one of the things i love about the web is getting to see how creative people are. 20 years ago it would have been really hard to see what people were making elsewhere. all paper mail and catalogs and such.

there is so much creative goodness. just start somewhere and keep clicking. Like knitty or the link list on supermaggie.

The supermaggie scarves I love: for me / for b.

b. was sweet to bring me home the new Giant Robot and ReadyMade. But I look at ReadyMade and I'm off and running - again.

the hat the hat!

so this was done last night. i only screwed up a little. and i didn't follow the pattern entirely either. had i done so 1) it would have been way too tall and 2) it might actually have fit better around the head.

we both have big heads, so i added a bit to the circumference. um. probably shouldn't have. but it's workable.

step away from the needles

i've been knitting the better part of the day. the hat will be done tonight. i feel so accomplished. finishing a knitting project only happens every couple of decades.

all quiet on the northwestern front

watching bad tv tonight while b. was working in his downstairs office. he came up for dinner and such. we ended up watching the bulk of titanic. let me say, for the record, in case you don't know me, i really really cannot watch bill paxton on screen without physical pain. anyway. b. was headed back down, and i said "but you haven't seen the sip shink yet". i do this all the time - switch letters. call it dyslexic tongue. anyway, he said "that's ok, i know what happens. the sip shinks".

yes, i know, that's 15 seconds you'll never get back.

random playa memory: b. found a xeroxed poster blowing around. "MISSING: Painting. The Scream by Eduard Munch. If found please contact Black Rock City rangers in Center Camp".

it's been a fairly quiet weekend. saw harry potter on friday night, slept in both saturday and sunday, went kite flying saturday afternoon. sunday's activities were the dog park (thanks tom for helping me hop the fence with buck) and the fremont street fair/octoberfest for a couple of hours. i've been totally jonsing to shop, but i have no budget for that right now. and in the right mood i like the sunday market. however i realized that for the most part i don't need any more crap. particularly not glass pipes, silver rings (mostly) or wonderful goofy and unwearable wool felted hats from nepal (mostly).

there was one vendor that stood out, and she reminded me somewhat of the bonnie-heart-clyde stuff (which i love). she is bella sisters. one coat in particular i was so sad to leave behind. even so, what i need is not the coat, it's a sewing machine.

i crave a sewing machine.

do i need it? no. but i want it. i have everything i need and then some. i'm a lucky girl that way. oh, but it would be good to find a great job. that i need.

enough rambling. this is what happens when there's nothing happening.

when plastic dogs dream do they do that twitch thing?

when i do the dishes at night, i make sure he is standing up and guarding the kitchen. when i get up in the morning he invariably has fallen asleep.

today i'm letting him sleep more so that he will stand watch later.

and, it is time to return to the work world. i'd love to continue the life of leisure and make art and walk the dog, however for the moment that's not listed as an option. but it feels good to have had the break, to be in a new head-space, all of that.

but if you've chosen to take a sabbatical from the tech world (of one sort or another) perhaps you also noticed the appeal of becoming a farmer or doing other more visceral work. me, i'd like a big studio loft and a darkroom, and a section for working on lighting design.

perhaps in time.

mufonslk

nate is one of my favorite people on this earth. he's come up before here on these pages, i've known him a long time now. it feels like i've watched him grow up. the day i met him he was a punk-ass kid with a chain wallet. he is a superb human and the most creative person i've ever met. so, it makes me really happy for him that he's listed with gary baseman (one of his favorite artists) on the cover of scene 360. i'm sure he's pleased too.

make sure to run behind the right truck

things i've learned recently

1) if you're going to run behind a truck at burningman, make sure it's the water truck. you don't want to run behind the johnny on the spot truck in a hungover mistaken moment yelling "spray me". (really, not personal experience)

2) if you are running behind the water truck, realize that you are on clay. slippery clay. doing a slip-and-slide burnout while naked can result in scrapes in tender places. (yes, this one was me)

3) make friends

4) do not camp next to bitchy people with bullhorns. total buzz kill.

5) when you leave the playa gas stations will not take mini-disco balls as payment.

6) neither will restaurants.

7) indoor plumbing, a short distance from the bedroom, is under-rated.

i had a great first burningman. it was b's third. all the way home we talked about what to do next year.

i had every intention of writing a long post about all the strange and wonderful things, but i'm finding it increasingly difficult to explain it all in words, back here in the big world.

we got there about 1:00 in the morning (car problems) and going out to the center playa the first night was crazy. and it got crazier from there. b. took most of the pictures that we have (drink more water, you *will* get sick and dehydrated) because that day i was sick and dehydrated - so i'll let him post them.

douglas has something to say about it all. it was good to see him there, even more fun to startle the hell out of him when we walked up to him sitting in camp one afternoon. it took a fair amount of work to find people (except andrew, who is always easy to find as the unimog is a good marker - hello luvee, hope your re-entry went well), and we never did find judith and co. (not for lack of trying).

it was so good to just *be* for a week. it was good to see so much creativity. b. is a great campmate, and so completely wonderful - so nice to just spend a week off together.

what else... i'm sure there will be more. all in all it was pretty mellow, or as mellow as burningman ever is.
